Tools are how you interact with the world. You can receive a select few from Farm Fan in the tutorial, or you can buy tools in the Grocery Store run by the villager Leif.
Hoe
Used to till the soil so you can plant your seeds. By holding the left mouse button, you can charge the hoe to till a 5x3 area in front of you.
Scythe
Used to clear grass, bushes, and flowers. When cutting down greenery, there is a chance for it to drop mixed seeds. You can charge your swing up and hit up to 15 blocks in front of you.
