There are currently two types of Fairies. Regular blue fairies and red mischievous fairies. Fairies will only appear during the Fairy Festival. Mischievous Fairies can be caught and returned to the Fey Queen during the Fairy Festival. Returning the Mischievous Fairies will result in varying rewards. The first two rewards will provide the resources for fixing the Fey Queen's castle.
